I first wrote this post on Medium years ago when we started DODO a design research firm based out of Western Africa. It was about how I fell in love with design and became an African design researcher (which is rare, if you know).
It’s now about 8 years later, nothing has changed. I guess, just like any true love story, the relationship only gets stronger with time. So here’s a redo of my 8 year old post, much has changed, yet not much has changed…
I still remember the day, I was about 12 years old and in secondary school (or high school as some know it). I was visiting London for the first time with my family for the summer holiday. It was an overnight flight from Lagos, and so we arrived Heathrow Airport the next morning at about 6am. I remember the weather was rainy and a bit chilly, but the dreary weather couldn’t dull my excitement, I was so excited. It was the first time I had ever traveled outside Nigeria.
We finished going through immigration and walked into the main airport, and it was then I thought my little 12-year-old-never-left-Africa-before-self had died and gone to heaven.
